Keep Showing UP!

Eat, Pray, Love

Image via Wikipedia

I just watched this video  of Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat Pray Love, talking about success & creativity and what it is we all have in us to succeed.  I found this revitalizing to me and I hope that it does the same for you and whatever creative processes you go through to “Keep Showing UP!”

Elizabeth Gilbert on Nurturing Creativity!

To me it showed that no matter what you want to be or who you want to be – you have it within you to be that person!

Artist – Author – Poet – Painter – Mom – Salesperson – Grandmother – whatever it is you want to be – Give it ALL you have to give!  Open yourself up and allow yourself to be who you want to be!

I doubt Ms. Gilbert will ever see this blog but I want her to know that she has inspired me – Today!  That she has allowed me to see who I am and the way I want to share with others.  I have a wonderful mentor in Renee Preis who has consistently shared with me that in Showing UP – putting myself out there in front of people and just being myself,  people will find value in me & what I have to share with them.

So – as said by the blogger “Our Own Sweet Time” –

“… tonight, I’m sitting here, toasting Elizabeth Gilbert. Belatedly.  Girl, you are good.   And I am grateful.  And I am, as well, discovering for the umpteenth time that sometimes people, experiences, love…and stories…arrive at just the perfect moment.”

(Thank you for saying it so well – Own Sweet Time!)

& to Ms. Gilbert – Ole!

My Husband – My Hero – My Teacher

Sonoran Desert N of Phoenix AZ 40968

I married my husband almost 17 years ago and when we met he was just starting his teaching profession.  He was working day & night to prove to himself and those kids in his class that he was worthy to be their teacher and that he had something for them to learn every day and 17 years later he is still doing exactly the same thing.

Our school in South Phoenix, AZ, is a very small private school in a very low-income part of the city.  Although we have seen our neighborhood grow and in many ways prosper, the truth of the matter is that when it comes to education here it is still sadly lacking.  We have about 50-60 students each year and we work on the old school-house principle.  We have K4-1st grade in 1 class and 2nd-4th grade in another, and my husband teaches 5th-8th grade all subjects. (Yup – he’s very smart! – all our teachers are very gifted.)

I love to see his kids come in to his class from the public school system at 5th, 7th or even 8th grade who can’t read or write their own names and leave with purpose, discipline, motivation and the ability to learn and become more than they ever thought they could be. Not every child who comes in to the school goes on to achieve “greatness” – that would be me telling more than a “tall tale”.  But I have seen children learn to read and how to socialize with kids & adults – re-purpose their goals and ultimately their futures with tools that have been gladly given to them.

Yes, we charge a tuition – a free education can be had at the public school, and the Arizona Charter School system leaves so much to be desired that we decided years ago that if the parents cared enough to pay even the lowest of tuitions they would care enough to back their children in all they wanted to do with their lives.  We’ve seen children come out of our neighborhood (27 years in the love of educating children) and go on to full scholarships: become doctors, lawyers, international baccalaureate members, scientists and excel in film as well as many other realms of creative and caring avenues.

So, when I say that my husband is my hero and my teacher – I really mean that – He teaches me every day how to open my heart to one more person – to see beyond what that person is wearing, the color of their skin, or the accent in their voice. He shows me that even in a little neighborhood in South Phoenix, AZ, our little school, in love, compassion and education can make a HUGE difference!

Today – I want you to know I’m here FOR you!

Kelong Walk : HDRI

I want you to know that no matter what is going on in your life right this very minute that it CAN be overcome; that we don’t have to live lives of despair and loneliness.  We are here for each other – we’re not left alone in the middle of a desert without water to drink.

We are all a part of what we call humanity and when we use the word “humane” it should mean more than just humanitarian, well, who even knows what that is?

But to be humane means to be:

There is so much more to what we share with people on the surface of our lives and to think that by standing up for what we believe and being willing & able to withstand persecution for that belief…That is to live by faith.  Pick just one word from this list and watch it grow! – Here is the list of words that comes from “compassionate”.

  • Sympathetic
  • Concerned
  • Kindhearted
  • Empathetic
  • Considerate

And the same is to be said for every word!  Even one of the smallest words in the English language; the word “The” – I never realized this before my Sunday School teacher brought it up a couple of weeks ago –

The:

  • Indicating one as distinct from another
  • Indicating shared experience
  • Indicating period of time

So, in this period of time we call Today, regardless of when that day is that you read this letter, there is someone here for you. You are NOT alone.  This is a favorite song of mine from years ago…but it always comes to remembrance when I’m feeling alone.  It’s a song that most have heard of, but I love it more today then yesterday.

I am weak, but Thou art strong;
Jesus, keep me from all wrong;
I’ll be satisfied as long
As I walk, let me walk close to Thee.

  • Refrain:
Just a closer walk with Thee,
Grant it, Jesus, is my plea,
    Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.

Through this world of toil and snares,
If I falter, Lord, who cares?
Who with me my burden shares?
None but Thee, dear Lord, none but Thee.

When my feeble life is o’er,
Time for me will be no more;
Guide me gently, safely o’er
To Thy kingdom shore, to Thy shore.

It’s A New Day, It’s The Same Old World…Or Is It?

Does everything automatically change with the clock at midnight? – the clock that on that magic hour on that magic day begins a brand new year?  Well this year I say YES – I say Yes to the possibilities – Yes to the changes I can make in people’s lives – Yes to speaking the truth – Yes to bringing happiness & joy & love to people – Yes to making a difference!

This is the year I will – do and be the things I dreamed of in 2010…I want to show people everywhere that the things they want to do in 2011 are possible too  –  I know this all looks so much like pooh-pooh or fluff…but don’t YOU want to make a difference this year?

We have possibilities everywhere in front of us – we just have to reach out to that star and see that it isn’t a falling star – it’s a sun with an infinite source of light and love and hope – – I know that with just one phone call, we can reach out to someone who needs that helping hand today.  When they can’t see the light for the darkness – We must be that candle – We must be that anchor they can hold on to in their storm!

Do you see it? – Do you have vision? – What do YOU want to do this year??? –  TOGETHER we can do ANYTHING…Do you believe?  Do you feel  it?  It isn’t about ME – It’s about WE! – There are ways to bring small changes in to our lives, our homes, our bodies that can bring about big changes.  The toxins in our minds are every bit as prevalent as the toxins in our homes. Bringing a way for people to provide for their families through the spirit of the entrepreneur – a way to make a change in that household finance plan while making a difference in other’s lives too!

It’s a brand new day and a brand new year.  How can I help you be what you want to be? – Am I rambling – probably – that’s the way my mind usually runs – from spot to spot and back again…cat’s at the window – gotta let him in…dog’s asleep on my bed…hubby’s at the Fiesta Bowl game with the guys…and I’m here – writing this blog – why?  Because I have something to say in 2011 – I have something to write in 2011…This is my turn to Pay It Forward!!!  My turn to help someone else!!!

Hear me – See me – Touch me – Feel me – Ooh – I’m quoting from “Tommy”…I guess things do come back around…She says with a smile on her lips and a twinkle in her eye…As my hubby told me today, we may not always be liked, but do you know you’re loved?

The weekend is here – Are you working?

Just curious – I am going to be working the majority of the weekend and sometimes it feels like it never stops.  But I have to see the bigger picture of things.  I have to see the end-game.  I keep telling myself that I do.

But why are so many people willing to “say” they want to do the extra work necessary to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and move ahead for themselves and their families or whatever it is that is important to them, but unwilling to actually do the work?  Have I written on this before?  I feel like it’s something that just grinds me over and over.  It’s not like it is only the younger generation or the Gen Y or the Gen X or even the baby boomer generation.  Are people tired or are they less motivated today than before?

Yesterday I read in Penelope Trunk‘s blog about her farmer and how he views things today – she writes, “I asked the farmer how he gets the cows to go to the corral. He says he used to try to force them. And it was always frustrating because they didn’t want to go. He was always fighting against them.  Now he tells himself he has an infinite amount of time. He tells himself it doesn’t matter when he gets them in the corral as long as he’s making progress. Sometimes he loses one or two cows as he’s going, but he knows they’ll come later if he gets the rest of them. And sometimes, if a cow isn’t coming with the rest, he tries to get her to go the opposite direction, away from the herd, and it confuses her so much that she follows the herd.  The farmer tells me that he stays calm and tells himself he just needs to be making progress.”

I think I would like her farmer…But, maybe I need to just learn from what she has shared about him in this post. “How to know if you’re making progress”.  I don’t very often refer people to a Penelope Trunk blog because, for me, she goes a little over the top, but I still find myself reading it and finding things to use in everyday ways.

I want people to be successful and I want to help them – yes, I do believe in “Pay It Forward“.  I am willing to work for others to be successful – we are in this together; or is that what we’ve forgotten?  There are alternative ways to be successful and we all measure success with different metrics.

So, me & Penelope’s farmer are going to just keep doing what we do and I’m going to keep putting one foot in front of the other and know that as long as I keep moving forward I’m making progress.  Then the other things will all come along – eventually.

Labor Day

Alternative version of image:Wooden hourglass ...

I know Labor Day is a day to rest from our labors – just one day…but very little in this life permits “rest”.  We scramble our way through each day and work so hard to realize dreams, and to create a place of peace and quiet and yes, “rest”.  We see time, just like the sand in this hourglass slipping away.  To push the reset button and break away from everything.   I’ve talked to several people this week and realized that what everyone calls “Karma” or “The Ripple Effect” or “The Secret” all comes back to what God says – “You reap what you sow”.

So, if today I push the “reset” button on how I think and what I value, I hope that you will push your “reset” button with me.  It isn’t about what we can make $ or own or get for ourselves. It really is about what we can give each other.   It is about how we can benefit even one person.

Life is so hectic – all this technology makes us crazy in our pursuit of riches, when what we have right now – right this moment – our lives, mates, broken-down cars, children, grandbabies, a day without bills in the mailbox – any and all of these things can make you cry and laugh…A line from a show I’m watching just really hit home… – “So, how do I respond to that? With a smile or with gunfire? – Nope – you respond with Patience”.

For today and tomorrow and every day after that, I pray that I see that what I sow is exactly what I reap. Please, help me remember that when I forget.  I have a favorite saying that I share with many gal friends and I’m going to paraphrase it to include the guys too.  “My friend sings the song when my heart forgets the words”.

Letter to self…What is your “Why”? What is your “Comfort Zone”?

We have a “why” we get up and out of bed each morning and go to work…whether it is:

  • We love those around us.
  • We want the best for those who depend on us.
  • We love what we do.
  • We want better for those around us.
  • We long to be independent of the restrictions placed on us by others. (Why or Comfort Zone?)
  • We love to be profitable & prosperous.
  • o Not for ourselves – but for others.
  • o To have that we might give more.
  • o To be able to enjoy the things God has given us.

These are all just a small piece of the why’s we have in our lives that define who we are and what we do each and every day.

Tell me your why! I really and truly want to know! I want to see beyond my limited vision to the possibilities that lie just beyond our comfort zone.

Do you have a “comfort zone”? – What is your fear of leaving and stretching beyond it? – I know what mine is – It’s the fear of getting up each morning without an 8-5 job to go to – no matter the cost!

I just read a quote on a friend’s Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/frost.energy – it said, “If you don’t like what you have…quit doing what you did”. Gee whiz that rang so true for me!

I look forward to really hearing from you on this…It’s important and vital and so far beyond where we all are today! I know that from each other we gain insight, we gain strength, we gain power, we gain friendship, we gain true knowledge, we gain support, we gain more – to be more than we are today – to be all we can be to be all God has called us to be!

We are a very strong people – with tools and resources we didn’t have even 10 years ago – we can reach out and touch 100’s of 1000’s of people with just a few clicks of the mouse. Don’t be a person who lets others dictate what is important in your life…

You have a “Why”. – – – – You have a “Comfort Zone”. – – – Stretch, Reach, See the Possibilities…
